MALDIVIAN BLUNDER

Bikash Choudhury

In hindsight, it now appears that allowing the going down of a popular and young Maldivian, President, and Mohamed Nassed in an unethical and unconstitutional coup was a huge error in judgment on the part of Indian Government. For, the current events in Maldives confirm a larger conspiracy against India and its interests in the region. India can’t now afford to make just knee jerk reaction any more. It is good and morally right not to interfere in the internal affairs of a sovereign Nation; but, it would be too innocent on our part to wash off our hands from a Nation in close proximity to be influenced by inimical forces with imperial and colonial design against India. Not long ago India had to intervene militarily in Maldives Island to safeguard its President and Island Nation against armed marauders; of course, on request from the then President, Mohamed Gayuoom. India is too big a country to expect a quid pro quo from a fragile Island Nation like Maldives. However, India should not leave any stone unturned to preserve and protect larger and long term strategic interest of the country in the region. In my opinion India should down grade the diplomatic representation at Maldives and also could announce a demarche to its diplomat in New Delhi. And, it should now be made very clear to the current Govt. of Maldives that India considers its decisions seriously; which is much above, just commercial consideration and would affect long term relations between two countries. Further, incase of any Natural disaster on account of Climate change phenomena; India could not be of any help, unless, Maldives change its current policies. However, India should be in touch with former President Mr. Nassed discreetly and keep a close vigil on the current leadership of Maldives to strike appropriately at a time of its own choosing.

CONGRESS-A BOLD MOVE

Bikash Choudhury

AYSSYG-As you see, so you get. A beaming and highly responsive Sonia Gandhi from the treasury benches drew the attention of millions of viewers during the FDI debate in the lower house; it was unusual and amusing when she gesticulated in response to a point raised by Smt. Shushama Swaraj. And, in contrast Prime Minister sat through the entire debate as quite as himself; even a die hard mind reader could not have guessed what was occupying his mind? The weak P.M tag given to him by non-other than Advaniji has fallen flat on his face as Singh Sahab weathered many storms inside and outside Parliament and still done exactly what he believed in “The Nuclear Deal last time and FDI in Retail now”. The silence and media shyness could be construed as his weakness at one’s own peril. Sonia Gandhi always considers him as very intelligent and treats him with dignity and respect of a Head of State, which he so eminently deserves. The dual leadership, two for party and one for Govt. has worked very well for the century old Congress party to steer such a large ship in very turbulent weather. The “quality of leadership” of INC at present has shown the chutzpa and drive which is heaps better than the competition, BJP. The party with difference has destroyed its leadership and has not brought up enough fresh bloods with new “Ideas” to steer itself in a difficult time for the party and the Nation. In a recent study published in the “Harvard Business Review” it was observed that “unconventional and unfiltered leaders have always produced extra ordinary results and brought epoch making changes while experienced and filtered leaders who come up from the rank and file in a conventional process produce average to good results only” This hypothesis holds good incase of Sonia Gandhi who came to Politics from the profession of ‘home maker’, Manmohan Singh comes from academic and professional economist back ground and Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister of Odisha comes from literary field; however, he has transformed the State Politics and Economics, that no one has ever attempted before. This could be due to a fresh perspective in contrast to a contrived notion as experience at times, comes with its own unwanted baggage.

Deependra Hooda, the young M.P from Rohtak echoed the right sentiment while speaking on FDI, he said “Hamare Bichar Alag Hosaktehein, Hamara Dristikona Alag Hosaktehein; lekin, Hamsabko Ekdusre Ka Bichar Ko Sanmaan Karna Chaihe”. This is the approach the Congress Leadership need to consider and adopt to make its umbrella party and our umbrella Nation of multiple ethnicities and culture with various dormant sub-National identities a formidable Nation that its majority young people dream of, and searching for right avenues to contribute. It is not very clear as yet, why FDI in Retail suddenly drove so much passion and so much virulent opposition; this may be just political than economic. Initially, Reliance Fresh met strident opposition to its stores selling fruits & vegetables on the guise of farmer’s interest and for the lively hood of small vendors. It is reality now that both coexist and flourishing in their own domain and with its own exclusive customers. Only thing, those farmers who now supply vegetables to Reliance Fresh stores in Bhubaneswar and elsewhere in the country have made higher margins with a nearly fixed and predictable income and, more over, their social status has improved in the society; making it easier for them to get a bride or groom in the Indian traditional market for marriages. The other argument that needs to be considered by the naysayer is the prospect of FDI brought competition making Indian Kirana shops becoming efficient by adopting technology and processes that would be a huge value proposition for Indian economy; while, wastes minimized and discovery of hidden values in human resources and its application.

Congress, along with slew of reforms including FDI in Retail need to make an attempt to change its approach towards consensus building and revisit some of the issues which were very dear to Sri Rajiv Gandhi, like Ganga Action Plan;which is still languishing and has not reached its logical conclusion even after two decades of being conceived and other thing that he raised with gusto, was the digitization of all transactions in Govt. and a Free Port at Andaman Islands which was shot down by pseudo Environmentalist. In addition, if Congress was able to make good with the words of its young leader, Rahul Gandhi; on bringing about systemic changes to sap corruption including the bill for public procurement in 18 months time; then, UPA II could actually bury the negative public perception about itself and infamous tag of “policy paralysis” though nobody knows for sure who coined the phrase which got wide currency of recent times and it could be a just and bold move for Indian National Congress.

CHINA & INDIA--COMMON INTEREST

                                           Bikash Choudhury

Twenty First Century belongs to Asia as last century belongs to North America and earlier century belonged to Europe. China is fast emerging as the leader of the pack in Asia in terms of Economic Growth, Technological Development and with strong Political & Military Leadership though Political Reforms and Free Press have been ignored. ASEAN countries are making rapid economic progress; however, their physical size and economy can’t put them in the leadership sweep stakes in Asia. Therefore, apparently China wishes to declare its sovereignty over South China Sea to indicate smaller Nations in the region and Japan to accept its leadership and never think of meshing around with the big brother in Asia. China has apparently tried to put India on notice before, but failed miserably. Many Political analysts believe that incident of exodus of North East Students & Workers in India from Southern States was the handy work of Chinese intelligence which took Indian Govt. by surprise initially; but, Indian Govt. has subsequently able to identify the perpetrators and would choose to deal with them silently. China is actually following a wrong and old strategy of 20th century ‘aggression’ to emphasize on its emerging pre-eminent position in Asia and subsequently for Global Leadership as the reigning super power shows sign of unprecedented economic slow down and political disarray. Because, any amount of aggression would not be able to contain India as China would have understood by now that India of 2012 is entirely and dimensionally much different from and of 1962. And, it would be in China’s own interest to cultivate India as USA had done before with Europe. Further, India & China share five century old religious and cultural exchanges, Huien Sangs & Confucius house hold names in India even today. Buddhism, which originated in India has been adored and practiced in China. India has a huge requirement in Investment and Technology in its Infrastructure sector; which if China wishes could take great advantage of while cementing the relationship of two giant neighbors in Asia. The only dissonance remain the, intractable boundary disputes and issues pertaining to Human Rights violations and status of liberty and free speech which is actually pulling down China; as, there is a limit to Economic growth on the back of labor arbitrages. China immediately needs to look at the conditions of its labor force; as in future there could be trade embargo on China on this issue. China needs to rethink on its strategy afresh and must contain its territorial ambitions and settle its border disputes with India soon and control its aggression on South China Sea and follow a new strategy of “World Peace & Development” to become the next Global power of this century.

DRAFT SPEECH AT PanIIT GLOBAL CONFERENCE

Bikash Choudhury

Chairperson of Organizing Committee, Galaxy of Speakers and Dignitaries on the dais, representative of Media, Ladies and Gentlemen. Let me start with a confession: I have tried to join IIT but failed. And, I look upon IITians as some one from Mars with high degree of Intelligence. I used to console my self “Dhiru Bhai didn’t go to IIT and          Bill Gates dropped out of College”

Friends, I have not come here to make a speech amidst such a galaxy of individuals and personalities; but, to share a thought; which I think important for the theme that you have chosen for this conference “tryst with destiny”. In my opinion “Sampurna Bharat and Samparna Bharat” as the destiny of this Nation by 2025. And, for this we need education, research, innovation and entrepreneurship to have tryst with our destiny. The Academic process in our Higher Education is more ‘memory’ oriented than learning or experimentation and questioning. We could encourage Academic & Research Excellence by enriching the campus life by organizing activity based program on various subjects and extra curricular activities on each weekend. The result can be monitored and later extended to all 16 IIT in the country. I wish Indian IIT system would prove to be a formidable Institution for education, research and technology development for the problems of people not only India but Globally.

LAVASA- A CITY FOR RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

                                                      Bikash Choudhury

Dubai ruler recently announced to launch a Mega City Project with investment of multi billion dollars; but, interestingly the city intend to cater to Tourism, Retail, Leisure, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. A right cocktail for faster development of a region. Though, the Idea may be equally or more relevant to India; but, when all four Indian metros have a crying need of huge investment to improve the quality of life, planning for a new city with a billion dollar investment could be dogmatic. But, India could do next best thing; convert an existing city with natural bounty into a hub for Research & Development, Art & Culture. And, LAVASA city near Pune fits the bill very eminently which is in the verge of completion; though, got little delayed on account of avoidable controversy on environmental concurrence. However, LAVASA city which is surrounded by green mountains and scores of natural streams and beautiful lake with close proximity to academic and industrial city Pune and Mumbai being a four hours drive must be very Ideal place to attract Top Researchers, Artist, Authors, Painters and Musicians Globally if GoI can provide free housing and Income tax holiday for 10 years with the rider of filing patents in India. In that case very soon India could give Western Nations a run for its money on the issue of technology, art and literature.

How to stop corruption in few easy and non-controversial methods?

                                                       Bikash Choudhury

Kejriwal has created a formidable reputation for himself by exposing high and mighty in the Govt. and in the corporate sector and brought awareness to millions of television infected homes with generous help of TRP obsessed electronic media by dedicating a few OB Vans to Kejriwal and Co. But, corruption does not show any sign of relenting; as we speak or write millions and millions of cash would be changing hands in between people in Business and Government. People in Govt. need not prepare a balance sheet, no P/L Account and don’t have to announce quarterly result and regularly meet investors and analysts; but, business have to do all those and more, and therefore they have enormous pressure on them to perform by ‘hook or crook’ and people in Govt. have to keep their political bosses in good humor and therefore, a marriage of convenience emerge and has been fortified for a long long time and that would need multiple strategy and attack on multiple points at the same time to become effective.

Corruption in Govt. can also be addressed in three easy steps; first, improve efficiency & effectiveness in Govt. (make all transaction in Govt. digital in one stroke) and see slow reduction in incidence of corruption. Second, bring in a sense of ownership in Govt. and third, create a ‘team spirit’ and culture of working in a team, just the way private sector does. All said and done, it is not easy to implement such policy in Govt.; but, senior leadership should have the vision, mission for the country in this regard. You need to sell a vision to the senior functionaries in the Govt. for example “best Govt. on earth”/ ‘most efficient & effective bureaucracy’ ect. And, facilitate intercourse between private and public sector to acquire the transparent and efficient culture and create a motivating and inspired environment in Govt. to reduce and eventually prevent the scope and scale of corruption that we see even to day; as a result of which we see millions of babies die after birth due to poor nutrition, people go to bed in hungry stomach, people are forced to live on the open air on the roads of cities and slums, our National High Ways are pot holed, our rivers full of polluted water, our unmanned railway level crossings rail travels have become killing field of innocents and above all in the land of Gandhi & Nehru, a mother find herself alone and helpless when she is being forced to kill her daughter before or after birth. The rich, the famous and the powerful should see the writing on the wall; if things do not change soon enough the poor and weak would shade their fear for once and would get together and take the laws into their hands and challenge the lives of the corrupts and the rich. That has happened before and could happen again; if it were not prevented. After all, history does repeat itself.

UNITED NATIONS & GLOBAL PEACE

Bikash Choudhury

United Nations in its current form after II World War had a supreme mandate to prevent and stop armed conflict between Nations. However, in over 60 yrs United Nations has summarily failed in its main objective and armed conflicts persist between Nations across the World and cost millions of innocent human lives. It has been observed, when one Nation wish to impose its will over Global community or intend to expand its influence and territory over land and seas by virtue of economic might, military prowess or its size and numbers creates conditions for a armed conflict. And, United Nations should always be in guard to prevent such occurrence. Now, in recent times China has attempted to impose hegemony over South China Sea which can lead to a very potential and disastrous armed conflict in Asia; if it were not nipped in the bud and United Nations should apply itself in the matter in time to maintain peace in the region. No Sovereign Nation has the right to an entire Sea/Ocean as it belongs to the entire Global community. China currently shows the sign of Nazism by virtue of its recent economic success and that can be addressed by the Global community by ticking off China with suitable trade sanctions, for a limited period in the beginning and therefore, it is imperative for UN and its Secretary General, Ban-Ki-Moon to deploy right quality of diplomacy in the matter; as prevention is better than cure. Apart from this UN could promote interactions between Region, Religion, Race and Culture to build better understanding among Nations and Peace for mankind.
